Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition marked by stiffness, persistent pain, and a limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. It often develops gradually over time and may follow an injury or period of shoulder immobility.

The condition occurs when the tissues surrounding the shoulder joint become inflamed and stiff, leading to the formation of scar tissue. As a result, movement becomes increasingly difficult and painful, and daily activities like dressing or reaching overhead can be significantly affected.

Frozen shoulder may be triggered by pain, trauma, or underlying chronic conditions such as diabetes or arthritis, which can reduce natural movement and contribute to joint restriction.

It’s important to note that any untreated shoulder issue—even mild discomfort—can eventually lead to frozen shoulder if you don’t actively work to maintain flexibility and full range of motion.

❗ Characteristics of Frozen Shoulder

  • Most commonly affects people between ages 40 and 70

  • Occurs more often in women, particularly postmenopausal women

  • Frequently seen in individuals with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, or cardiovascular conditions

Early diagnosis and active treatment are essential to reduce pain and restore shoulder mobility before the condition worsens. Asian medicine approaches such as acupuncture, herbal therapy, and targeted movement can help improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and support gradual recovery.
