Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a common infection or inflammation of the prostate gland. It can affect men of all ages and does not increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Symptoms may include:

  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate

  • Pain during urination

  • Chills and fever

  • Pelvic discomfort or pain

Treatment often involves anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics, alpha-blocker drugs, and warm sitz baths.

Most men diagnosed with prostatitis have chronic prostatitis/pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), either inflammatory or non-inflammatory. The exact cause of this type is often unknown.

Only a small percentage of prostatitis cases are caused by bacterial infection.

Challenges in Chronic Prostatitis Treatment

For acute prostatitis, doctors typically prescribe antibiotics, which are effective in about 50–60% of cases.

However, in cases of chronic prostatitis, treatment becomes more difficult because the prostate gland has limited blood flow, making it harder for antibiotics to reach the affected area.

Studies report that patients with prostatitis often experience both physical and mental fatigue, as well as depression, due to repeated treatment failures.

Treatment for Prostatitis

Rather than relying on a single approach, I use a combination of therapies tailored to each patient’s body constitution. This integrative strategy helps increase the chances of successful treatment.

🔹 Therapies commonly used for prostatitis include:

  1. In Asian medicine, prostatitis is often caused by kidney dysfunction due to improper diet, excessive sexual activity, or aging. Treatment involves restoring kidney function and enhancing the immune system.

  2. Antibiotic and antiviral herbal remedies may be used to help reduce prostate inflammation.

  3. Long-needle acupuncture can be applied directly to the prostate area to stimulate white blood cell activity and boost immune response.

  4. Grand moxa therapy is used to rapidly restore energy levels and enhance immunoreactivity.

  5. Herbal teas made from small willow herb, saw palmetto, pygeum, and stinging nettle can help soothe prostate discomfort and support urinary health.

General Treatment Plan

At the start of treatment, herbal medicine is prescribed to help increase energy and boost the immune system.

Once the patient reaches a certain level of energy and stability, acupuncture is introduced to promote blood and Qi circulation.

Improved circulation helps reduce inflammation in the prostate and supports overall healing.

If necessary, warmed jade therapy may be applied to the perineal area to further enhance blood and Qi flow around the prostate.
